Drought is an enduring feature of the Australian landscape and it has significant economic, social and environmental impacts. The Future Drought Fund will provide a secure revenue stream to be used for drought resilience, preparedness and recovery to help farmers and communities prepare for inevitable future droughts.
The Australian Government has committed $3.9 billion to the Future Drought Fund, which is expected to grow to $5 billion (expected by 2028-29). From 2020-21 $100 million will be available annually to support drought resilience projects. This investment will help lift the productivity and profitability of the agriculture sector and enhance the health and sustainability of Australia’s farming landscapes.
Work will soon commence on developing a Drought Resilience Funding Plan - a high level framework to guide the approach for investing in future projects. This process includes a six week period of public consultation.
